The symbol of Sapporo – Sapporo Clock Tower
The idea to build Sapporo Clock Tower belongs to Dr. William Clark – the president and founder of Hokkaido Agricultural College.
The Clock Tower is the historical memorial and cultural symbol of Sapporo. It is because it was built in 1878 during the Hokkaido development period to serve as a drill hall for military training and physical education at the first in Japan Agricultural Collage (now Hokkaido University). Ever since Sapporo was developed and people moved there – every hour they were greeted by the sound of the Clock. It was and still is a meeting point for locals and a must see point for visitors (best photo spot for instagram lovers;)). In autumn 2018 the Tower was reopened after renovation and now you can enter it to learn about history of Sapporo and the Clock Tower itself.
