Goryokaku – the most peaceful fort in the world.
Built in 19th century as an invincible star-shaped fortress with no blind spots Goryokaku was meant to protect Hakodate from the western threats. This gorgeous citadel is now an important historical site. It will be remembered as the main fortress of Republic of Ezo, and famous as a site of the last Boshin War battle.
After it served its purpose Goryokaku was reconstructed into a park. And not just a park – the symbol of Hakodate, one of the best cherry blossom spots in Hokkaido and the best place to relax for locals and tourists.
You won’t be disappointed no matter when you come – in winter it is covered in shiny snow, in springs cherry is in bloom, in summer enjoy greenery and seasonal flowers while autumn offers magnificent view during the red leaves season.
Have some quite time enjoying nature.
Definitely one of the best if not the one – panorama view of Hakodate is available from the top of over 100 meter tall Goryokaku tower.
Want to see something traditionally Japanese – the Former Magistrate’s Office is built (restored) in the best traditions of Japanese architecture.
